Relationship of fish fauna ad water resources at the Shwe- Kyat-Yaik segment of Irrawaddy River, Amarapura Township, Myanmar

Abstract

There was riverine ecosystem assessment at the Shwe – Kyat - Yat segment of Irrawaddy River, Amarapura Township, Myanmar and its survey period was from 2015 to 2016, result of physico chemical indicator of water resources for turbidity was highest in October, moderate in December, and little higher than the criteria in February by comparing W.H.O standard. Similarly, Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) is also higher than the criteria. Concerning Dissolved Oxygen (DO) was still reasonable values by comparing with W.H.O criteria and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) was little higher than criteria in November and December 2015 as well as January and February in 2016. Observing fisheries resources; many fishes belonging to Order Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, and Perciformes, that are the most abundant in the study area. But some of riverine impacts on Irrawaddy River were observed; taking the sand from the bottom of the River by powerful machine, making battery shock type fishing, using chemicals in order to catch the huge lobsters and economic fishes, designating cement port where carrying many cement bags at the bank and carrying petrol tanks on ships for selling purpose, these are leading to water pollution and destruction of fish habitats because of some of cement dusts are easily falling into the water bodies and spilling petrol on the surface of the water, therefore, leading towards lower fisheries diversity and deterioration of water quality against water sanitation regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, it is vital importance to have effective monitoring with stakeholder mapping regarding long term sustainability and to encourage public awareness for community development.
