| Despite the on-going provision of water and sewerage services, water services continue to face issues related to supply and security, high non-revenue water (NRW) and low coverage in rural areas. As for sewerage services, low coverage of connected services and non-compliance to environmental standards are becoming more challenging due to rapid urbanisation, growing population, increased industrialisation and economic development. In recent past, claims have been made for increased public participation in the management of water resources. This strategy aims to increase the sense of water ownership and involvement among the public through education, capacity building, awareness creation and water advocacy. The objective towards establishing a holistic understanding among the public entities on the importance of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) will be pursued in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP), 2021-2026, with a focus on valuing water through educational approaches and awareness creation at community level. Further emphasis will be given to strengthening public consultation mechanism and inclusion in planning and decision-making processes to ensure an effective transformation of the water sector. |
