Abstract

Ca Mau is one of 6 provinces in the Ca Mau peninsula, with 3 sides facing the sea, is a lowland area, with surface water is mostly contaminated with alum, saline water can not be used for living, eating and drinking, washing fresh water sources mainly use from rainwater and groundwater.<br> According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ca Mau province, the whole Ca Mau province has 180,000 wells; Of which, 40,000 wells have been seriously polluted (according to the prescribed standards, they must be closed and cannot be used because they do not meet hygiene standards). Notably, of the contaminated wells, 2/3 of smuggled underground water wells are not managed by the local authorities. The above situation leads to the consequence that the underground water source is used indiscriminately, in danger of depletion, and causing environmental pollution. [1]<br> To solve the problems in the Ca Mau  peninsula, a basic hydrogeological groundwater model is setup containing seven aquifers and seven aquitards by using the FEFLOW model system. This model will be used for three different objectives, which are done by three different partners: 1) KIT-ENMINSA will use this model for the development of a forecasting system for saltwater intrusion. 2) Aquantec will use this model to calculate the diffusion and dispersion of pollution in the different aquifers and 3) KIT-IPF will use this basic model to simulate land subsidence according to groundwater overexploitation. The strategy for model development and first results will be presented.<br> Additionally Aquantec  is developing a basic model to calculate actual evapotranspiration/ groundwater recharge with high resolution using FAO method.
