Evaluation of Groundwater Quality and Remediation for Utilization of Tamarind Kernel Powder as Natural Coagulant

Abstract

Water is the most vital parameter among the natural resources. The main focus of this research was emphasized on the evaluation of groundwater quality and the investigation of effective treatment method for clean and safe drinking purpose. In this present study, the physico-chemical characteristics of groundwater sample collected from upper part of Nyaung-Thone-Pin Village (Site A) and lower part of Pa-Done-San Village (Site B) located in Aung-Chan-Thar Quarter, Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region were evaluated during Winter and early Summer Seasons. The treatment process was carried out by using agro-waste tamarind kernel powder as effective natural coagulant for the reduction of turbidity and some toxic minerals to permissible level. The effectiveness of bioflocculant tamarind kernel powder has been evaluated by varying pH and coagulant dosage conducted under jar test apparatus, after plain sedimentation and first filtration. It was found that highest turbidity reduction efficiency of 87.4% was achieved at pH value of 7.  Agro-waste natural coagulant tamarind kernel powder in jar test apparatus worked better cost effective method than the convectional alum coagulation method. Effort of this research would be supported for sustaining the safe water remediation and environment friendly technology for urban community.
