Abstract

Flood damage change markedly between events and regions, therefore the developed empirical damage function does not perform well when spatially and temporally transferred. In this study, a distributed flood damage estimation tool formulated based on synthetic relationships between different flood inundation parameters and rice production loss is introduced. It calculates the economic damage for rice correspond with different growth stages based on the simulated flood duration and water depth obtained from the hydraulic model covering multiple flood events. A case study illustrates the application for a small region in Nghe An, Vietnam, which is frequently affected by floods. The simulated flood damage shows large variaty with the observations – post flood surveyed damage.
