Mangrove extent changes reflect the environment and ecosystem services in Vietnam Red River delta using remote sensing technique

Abstract

Mangrove forests provide critical ecosystem services and support the livelihoods of many coastal communities. The forests have many functions such as shoreline protection by reducing the impacts of storms and tidal surges, and provide ecosystem services to local coastal villages namely harvesting clams, craps, shirmps and fish in the forests. Aware of this importace, the government has been promoting the forest plantation for decades. Hence, the mangrove forest in Thai Binh province have been expanded quicky. In this study, we investigate the mangrove changes in extent by using time-series Landsat images accquired every five years from 1975 to 2019 and analyze the corellation between the forest development with some aspects of water environmental issues and the local forest-related livelihoods. We chosed Thuy Truong commue as a repesentative case study for the region. We found that the presentation of mangrove forest around 1975 was minor, and developed slowly in the early stage. However, the mangrove extent was expanding quickly in the last two decades thanks to the forest plantation. The local people are benefited from the forest such as storm protection, havesting sea products and aquaculture (the aquaculture area is raising). Remote sensing techology revealed an effective tool to analyze historical spatial data and a suitale for mangrove studies.
