Abstract

Flood monitoring is one of the biggest missions in sustainable development strategy of Lower Mekong Region where recently flood inundation becomes more complex. The limited budget impedes the widely distribution of gauging stations. As a result, It is difficult to provide an overview of flood even though this plays an important role in flood management. To solve lacking of observational data, remote sensing technology has been increasingly showing its effectiveness in retrieving inundation information from satellite imagery with wide coverage as well as long-term, high frequent observations. This study presents a novel approach for estimating flood extent and level in spatial scale using satellite imagery data and in‐situ measurements. Landsat satellite constellation, Sentinel-1 SAR, Sentinel-2 MSI and MODIS were employed to detect changes of the flood events. Results of this research strongly are helpful for policy-makers, researchers to map spatial dynamic of flood hydraulic. In addition, the archived results also can provide valuable information for hydraulic model with input, validation, calibration model especially in the areas where lack of pre-required such kind of datasets.
