The Mekong River Basin is an important source of water and greatly influences the livelihood and economy for millions of people in the countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. This region is home to expansive agriculture that relies heavily on annual precipitation over the basin. The annual precipitation is dependent on the global/southeast Asian monsoon system and varies seasonally and inter-annually. The seasonality of the precipitation (Figure 1) makes certain areas of the basin become highly susceptible to flooding during the rainy season, which extends from June to October. Severe floods can potentially cause widespread damage and endanger food supply and lives of those who live in the area
