Drought is considered as one of the most complex and costliest weather-related natural hazards. In Vietnam, recently, droughts have caused massive socio-economic damages, threatening sustainable development in the country. Meanwhile, drought policies and actions have been not efficient because it is unclear why droughts happen; when, where they occur; who and what are impacted; how severe droughts are and what responses can mitigate the problems in the region. Accordingly, the BIG DREAM project brings together multidisciplinary excellences in hydro-meteorological sciences, mathematic modelling, security and health care science, informational technology expertise, educators and water user communities to develop a new national operational service together in tackling disastrous drought impacts in Vietnam through robust scientific studies and high applicability in co-design with user groups.
