The Mekong Delta, Vietnam is a highly productive delta system that forms the granary of the country. Increasing urbanisation and fragmented water governance combined with a physically and ecologically complicated environment however represent a threat to future development. In particular the excessive use of groundwater resources and the associated subsidence and salt water intrusion are rapidly emerging issues. Our aim is to enhance the capabilities of individuals and organisations to develop sustainable strategies for dealing with these problems. A new integrated delta model will be developed and implemented, linking surface water, groundwater and geo-mechanical models, to analyse the interrelated character of groundwater extraction, subsidence levels and salt water intrusion.
