Hard coal mining in the province Quang Ninh is taking place for more than 130 years. Currently, about 95% of the national hard coal production comes from the province. The mines are managed by the state-owned VINACOMIN group. Mining is one of the main income sources of the province. Beside mining, in recent years Quang Ninh Province has developed into an important tourist attraction for domestic and international tourists as Ha Long Bay is also located in the province. Ha Long Bay is a recognized UNESCO World Natural Heritage as well as one of the \"New 7 Wonders of Nature\". Both, mining and tourism, need to be developed further side by side and for long-term. As hard coal mining causes significant impacts to the water resources robust technical concepts for mine water treatment were required in first place. Ha Long City is a fast-developing urban area with increasing water demands. The water supply of the city currently depends on a single water reservoir with limited capacity. Water reuse concepts for treated mine water are one option for mitigating the pressure on the urban water supply system.
